You Can be a Mentor

Mentors provide leadership with guidance and encouragement to young men as they begin to develop the life skills necessary in their journey as productive, engaged and contributing members of society.

What does it take to be a mentor? First, an interest in, and a commitment to the programs, goals and objectives of Micah's House NWA. We are seeking open-minded individuals who are willing to embrace diverse perspectives. Mentors should have energy and enthusiasm for Micah's House programs, and have a desire to give of themselves for the betterment of the community.
We believe that family is who you choose to "do life" with, which may or may not include a young man's family of origin. Our model, "father-brother-friend," seeks to match a mentee with three men of varying ages and in different stages of life:
  • Father - an empty-nester or close to it. Has pretty much raised his own children and has some time and wisdom to pour into another young man who may be close in age to his own children or much younger. The "father" mentor is basically the leader of his mentoring tribe and provides support to the "brother" and "friend" mentors.
  • Brother - mid-career, 30s-40s in age, likely busy raising his own kids. The "brother" mentor fulfills the role of letting the mentee experience what his life could look like in the future. The "brother" mentor would ideally have a willing spouse and family who is willing to make room for another member. We encourage as much familial interaction as possible.
  • Friend  - ages 20-30, single or married, kids or no. This is a mentor who can emulate good choices and healthy behaviors as a contemporary of the mentee. We encourage events-based relationship building with this mentor. Fishing, camping, movies, bowling, whatever interests the two may share.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITES:
  • Be accessible and commit to meet with your mentee regularly
  • Establish trust and maintain confidentiality
  • Identify and encourage learning opportunities for your mentee
  • Share personal experiences and perspectives
  • Embrace relationship with passion and commitment
